Men's Squash Advances to Division Final at Nationals

Feb. 20, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, MA - George Washington men's squash reached the finals of the Conroy Division at the Men's College Nationals held at Harvard this past weekend. In that championship match, GW lost a heartbreaking contest, 5-4, against No. 1 seed Colby College.

Their strong performance gives the Colonials, a varsity program only six years old, an impressive final 2008 national ranking of 26th.

GW, seeded 3rd in their division, beat USC on Friday in the first round, 7-2. The next day, in the second round, the Colonials beat the Camels of Connecticut College, who they had lost to in the regular season, 7-2. GW's No. 1 player, senior Jarryd Commerford won his match against Rob Purple, who is ranked 189th in the country.

GW faced the No. 1 seed, Colby, in the finals of the Conroy Division on Sunday afternoon. Even though the Colonials lost their No. 2 player, Matt Grossman, to an ankle injury for the final, they still came within one game of winning the match before falling, 5-4.

Senior co-captain Alex Funk had a tremendous showing at the tournament. He did not drop a game in any match as the team's No. 3 player and held on to win 3-0 at the 2nd position against Colby when teammate Grossman had to withdraw.

The George Washington men's squash team finished at Nationals with a new ranking of 26th in the nation. Jarryd Commerford will represent GW at the US College Individual Tournament in two weeks at Navy.
